Nao Kaiba (海馬 尚, Kaiba Nao, born December 27) is a fictional character created by Umi that lives in the world of Yugioh DuelMonsters. Legally she is the daughter of Aileen Kaiba (née Noda) and Seto Kaiba.

Development

At some point, most likely in November 2021^{[citation needed]}, Umi's friend Kroko showed her a screenshot of a random anime girl with long black hair and jokingly said something along the lines of “haha, that girl looks like she could be Aileen’s and Seto’s lovechild!”. This activated Umi's hidden trap card Inability To Not Think About MarySue Children which led to her pondering the circumstances under which a child could even happen in the Kaiba household and, subsequently, creating Nao.

She has not appeared in any written works yet.

Character Biography

Nao is a Japanese girl with long straight black hair and dark brown, almost black eyes^[1]. She's 1,79m (5'9'') tall and, as a teenager and young adult, very slender. Once she gets more physically active, she is quick to become broader though. She is usually depicted with pale skin and suffering from a terminal case of resting bitch face.

Her wardrobe of choice consists almost entirely of dark colors in a style somewhere between Dark Academia adjacant and practical. It is heavily implied that one of the reasons for that is her association of dark clothes with the one adult in her life who always made her feel safe and seen.

Nao might seem like a very calm, cool and laid-back person but is actually very intense about her interests and quick to tear up when she feels bad for someone else. She happily adopts new interests from the people she feels close to and generally approaches new experiences and aquaintances in good faith. She loves collecting things but the focus of her collection shifts a lot.

She is asexual and entirely disinterested in sex, but easily crushes on people of all genders.

Nao was an accident caused by her mother not being on birth control anymore after her and Seto's sex life became basically nonexistent at some point throughout their marriage. The general decline of their relationship is well known and at least within the Kaiba household, it's an open secret that Nao most likely isn't Seto's biological child. Seto is aware of that as well. What he is not aware of is the fact that his personal assistant Koichi Isono is the one his wife cheated with on him.

Since neither Seto nor Aileen have a single reliable parental bone in their body, despite loving their daughter to the best of their respective abilities, the majority of childcare falls to Isono. Nao herself is unaware of her parentage. As far as she is aware, she is the biological daughter of both Seto and Aileen Kaiba.

Her go-to parental adult/father figure is Isono and she also greatly admires her cool uncle Mokuba and the stories he tells of his adventures all over the world.
The relationship between Nao and her parents is a little more distant, which isn't bothering her though.

Her mother never had the patience to raise her when she was still a small child and acted more like a fun aunt who'd lose patience and ask Isono for help as soon as actual parenting was necessary. She likes to hang out with her more now that she is older, but still doesn't really know or understand her.

On the other hand Nao's father, Seto, did occasionally attempt to parent her, but his understanding of parenting is and always has been rather limited. It mostly amounted to him taking her along to wherever he was going without any risk assessment or actual paying attention to her. Since Nao lacked the trauma Mokuba experienced she also lacked that "us against the world" mentality that got him to just roll with whatever his big brother was up to, so she usually stayed close to Isono and followed his lead instead.
